Straight From the Mouth of Self-Help Author Jamie Linn Saloff

The Inspiration Behind Hatch: A Change Your Life Guide

By Jamie Linn Saloff

I hadn’t seen my brother for over twenty years, then in early August of this. year, we were fortunate to finally meet up. After going out to dinner he laughed and said, “Do you remember this?” and he proceeded to tell a story about three-year-old me when I took a crayon

and wrote all over the foyer floor. My mother, apparently frustrated by the unending antics of an active three-year-old (she had me late in life), handed me a rag and commanded that I “clean it up.” According to my brother, I looked up at my mother and declared, “You’d better get some Ajax because this (expletive) isn’t going to come up.” And thus began my career as a writer.

Shortly after, I would work tirelessly to carefully create connected swirls and tall loops on a scratch pad. I filled page after page. Once again, my mother’s critique did not come off favorably. “Why did you ruin this tablet?” she asked. “I’m writing a book!” I declared.

Fortunately, my next foray into writing, a hand-typed, error-filled, 4x5 sheet of paper containing my eight-year-old bio, finally found “publication” when my mother glued it permanently into my baby book.

All this foolishness aside, I think this means I always knew I would be a writer, that I always knew I would write books, I just had to find my way. That would take time, effort, struggle, frustration, and so much more as I traveled along my way to publication.

After I married, I tried my hand at writing articles for magazines. Being rejected by Brides, and others, I tried for smaller and smaller publications. I remember being thrilled to have an article appear in a magazine focused on coupon clipping. My first paid article featured my mother’s home business, which appeared in a collecting magazine. Still, my “career” in writing wasn’t exactly moving forward, nor was it profitable.

About this time, I attended a seminar on getting published. The speaker also hosted a weekly round table at his home for a handful of wannabe authors. He taught us how to review other’s writing (does it make you feel?) and how to attend to the business of writing by sending query letters. From this focused study, I sold my first book, The Collector’s Encyclopedia of Cowan Pottery. Not long after, I sold my second, The Publishing Center. But neither of these books were really what I wanted to write about. My husband kept teasing me that I should “write something that sells like a JFK Conspiracy book” but instead, I started writing about how I transformed my life.

Most of my life I struggled to find my place. I didn’t seem to fit into normal circles. As I began to find my way, my life broke wide open. Amazing things began to happen. I knew I wanted to share what I’d learned with others. I wanted them to know, no matter what you’ve been through—illness, trauma, grief, etc., these are the things that make you into who you are meant to be. Having been in a place where I never believed life could get better, I found myself driven to share my story and help others so they too could follow their heart and break open their lives too.

Although I initially pursued publishing that book traditionally, along my path to writing it, I began helping the formerly mentioned mentor take his books to the new-on-the-scene Lighting Print (which would later become Lightning Source). From this, I quickly found myself in the business of helping other authors self-publish. (I am now semi-retired from that endeavor). My own books floundered while I gave other authors my attention.

During those years, I also began giving a lot of my time as a volunteer for a writer’s organization. I met so many helpful people—authors, agents, editors—and learned so much from them. Most of them were happy to give back because someone did the same for them. (I highly recommend this to others who want to learn the ropes of publishing.)

In 2017, after a bout of breast cancer, I realized I wanted to refocus my attention on my own books. All told, I have published twelve, my latest being Hatch – A Change Your Life Guide. I’m also working on a series of Marvelous Messages books the next to be “…From Your Ancestry” which also includes a deck of cards. After that, I want to create a video course, a community where I can interact with others, and an incubator program where I can privately mentor others.

Writing, publishing, and working with countless other authors, has given me a wonderful life adventure. While I might not have traveled this path had I known the struggles and frustrations I would face, having come this far, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I still find the art and science of publishing fascinating.

For More Information

Thanks for letting us interrogate interview you!  Can you give us a go-for-the-gut answer as to why you wanted to be an author?

As an attorney, I have done a lot of writing, so that part was easy.  I didn’t plan on writing a book.  I had written some quick relationship tip sheets that I wanted to give away on my
website.  Then I decided to add my angels as the theme, so I had them painted.  Once the angel portraits were done – it became a book and I just had to finish it.

Tell us (we won’t tell promise!) is it all it’s cracked up to be?  I mean what are the perks and what are the demands?

Demands - Writing can be lonely if you are used to being in a busy office with lots of chaos and drama.  There is also the question of whether anyone will want your book, when all is said and done.  This is also dramatically connected to your financial state – unless you are independently wealthy!

Perks – Personal freedom!  I love knowing that I can do what I want and write about what I want!  I may choose to work today, but I don’t have to impress anyone with my work ethic or appear at 8am somewhere everyday!

Which route did you take – traditional or self-published – and can you give us the nitty gritty low down on what’s that like?

I love design, so I wanted to have a beautiful gift book and be in control of the cover, colors, fonts, and content.  I choose self-publishing for that reason and because I am impatient and didn’t want to go through the submission and rejection (and possibly no acceptance!) in the traditional route.  Amazon’s Create Space made it very easy and really a pleasure.  The only delays have been my own – correcting, fixing, adding more content.

What’s the snarkiest thing you can say about the publishing industry (e.g. rejections, the long wait, etc.)

I am too early in the process to really comment.  Great question!

Tell us for real what your family feels about you spending so much time getting your book written, polished, edited, formatted, published, what have you?
My daughter approves.  I am currently living alone, so am blessedly free from any criticism of my schedule, late nights or obsession with my book!  My friends aren’t really aware of where I spend all my time.

What was the craziest or insane thing that happened to you in the book publishing process?

I am pretty new – so I should have a much better story in a few months. This is pretty boring - I did have a book cover designer who didn’t really think I meant what I said about how the book should look.  I had to have them modify the cover to follow my original intent.  Other than that it has been really smooth!

How about the social networks?  Which ones do you believe help and which ones do you wish you could avoid?

I only use Facebook and Twitter – and I think they can be helpful.  I use Aweber and Social Oomph to make it easier.  I would skip Twitter, but it seems to be important and many people read my tweets – which is amazing.

Book sales.  Don’t you just love them (or lack of?)?  How are you making the sales happen for you?

I am working with Dorothy Thompson of Pump Up Your Book.  I am pretty good at many things I do, but marketing is NOT one of them.  I knew I needed help!

What is one thing you’d like to jump on the rooftop and scream about?

Since the object of my book is to ignore what I can’t control and other techniques to let go and be happy – I should not say what I would jump on the rooftop and scream about – (sounds of laughter).   However, if I were really human – I would say that if I get a negative review of my book, (that I, of course, feel is entirely unfounded) that would do it!

Okay, too much sugar for you today!  Here’s a nice cup of Chamomile tea and come on over and sit under the cabana and watch the waves roll in.  Now…can you tell us what you love about being a published author and how all those things above doesn’t matter because it’s all part of the whole scheme of things and you wouldn’t have it any other way?

I so agree with the part above – “all those things don’t really matter”!

What I love the most is the idea of freedom.  I want the opportunity to “sit under the cabana and watch the waves roll in” – more than for 2 or 3 weeks a year. That is my goal as a semi retired writer - to be able to travel more and enjoy everywhere I am, every day!

Thank you so much for the interview and very clever questions!  Eve Picquette

Straight from the Mouth of 'Stairway to AWESOMENESS!' Tanya Masse

OH NO SHE DIDN’T!

OH YES I DID Dr. Phil! (Hehe) I’ve done it! I have written a self-help book and established myself as a self-proclaimed “expert” on how to live an awesome life!

And guess what?! I am not EVEN a therapist, a psychologist, a doctor of any sort or an educated mental health professional with any type of degree or designation. My
"credentials" do not come from reading and studying text books, passing exams or graduating with a diploma. They were earned the hard way, the REAL way, through a lot of hardcore living and learning. That is something that cannot be bought or taught.

Life is hard and it isn’t always fair. Sometimes… life is downright INSANE! I have experienced many of life’s seemingly insurmountable blows and for many years I lived a dark, disturbing, depressing, miserable and reckless existence as a result. I wallowed in a sea of self-pity and negativity to the point that I almost drowned. At my lowest, my mental health was so seriously compromised that I didn’t care if I lived or died.

Sounds disturbing, doesn’t it? Well it was. But a few years ago I decided to rise above it all! I changed my way of thinking, stopped setting myself up for failure and reinvented myself into the person that I am today...a strong, happy and positive person and parent who strives to achieve “awesomeness” every day, in every way! And let me tell ya, it wasn’t easy! You want to know why it wasn’t easy? Because I struggled with so many things that I was conditioned to believe… that’s why.

Stairway to Awesomeness is not your average self-help book. It is the ultimate self-improvement book that goes against the grain of many self-help/self-improvement books out there. And I say that with great confidence. I take my readers on my very real tragedy-to-triumph life journey and explain HOW and WHY I changed my way of thinking about many things that so many of us are conditioned to believe. I encourage my readers to focus on the positive, recognize the blessings and find the humor in life instead of taking it way too seriously… even in the face of adversity! The 30 fundamental steps that I write and illustrate about are tried-and-true and life changing. I prove that achieving a life of awesomeness IS possible. There is also a very unique and humorous comic twist throughout the book that will make you smile as you make your own climb to awesomeness!

Since I decided to write this book I have encountered many awesome people that have said “You know, I should write a book about my life too!” or something to that effect. If you have a real-life story that would inspire others be awesome, what are you waiting for? Write it! The world needs more of that!
