The Inspiration Behind Nurse Dorothea Presents Why Coping Skills Work and What Are Some That Can Be Done Anytime and Anywhere

By Michael Dow

I have had a love of writing since high school.  When I was a teenager, I focused on poetry.  Later in college, I developed a love of research and summarizing information.  I found synthesizing information exhilarating.  I joined the Air Force and experimented in writing my first book titled The Pen and Paper Diet (rebranded as The Prepper’s Diet®).  Then, I became a social worker for the Army at the local VA hospital and created multiple resource information sheets to gather resources into one place.  I then went through nursing school as a third career and the COVID pandemic happened.  My children and to transition to online learning like all kids and I was disappointed in the quality.  I thought, “What if I wrote a kid’s science book to help supplement their education and then they would have to read it since dad wrote it.”  I wrote my first kids book title Nurse Florence, Help I’m Bleeding.  It won a silver Nautilus award so I realized I might have found a niche I could thrive in.  A year after that, I started recruiting more illustrators and won a best series award for Nurse Florence® with Independent Press Award.  I was interviewed about it and was asked when I would create a mental health series for kids since I work as an inpatient psychiatric nurse.  I found the right illustrator and Lindsay Roberts and I teamed up to create Nurse Dorothea.  It is geared toward teenagers and young adults and has won Distinguished Favorite with NYC Big Book Award.  We publish a new Nurse Dorothea every 5 weeks.  The Coping Skills book is book #3.  I wrote this book to help people understand how simple coping skills are and how we can use healthy ones in everyday life.  Nurse Dorothea is a high school nurse who leads an after-school club about mental health to destigmatize mental illness.  We hope this series transforms our society as well as all societies.  Now is the time to address mental health.  Now is the time to get the help we need.  Help Civilization Reach Its Potential® is our company’s slogan and we believe this series will help us achieve this goal.

Straight From the Mouth of Christian Nonfiction Author J.A. Cox

The Inspiration Behind The Beauty of Tribulation

By J.A. Cox

The Beauty of Tribulation was written to provide answers based upon scripture to help us understand things such as:

  • The purpose of tribulation in the life of a believer.
  • Reasons why it is necessary.
  • How God uses it for our edification and his glory.
  • How God is not the author of our tribulation.

At the root of it, the greatest purpose is to depict the beauty of our painful, frustrating, and most hopeless moments when we allow God to complete the work he is trying to accomplish through them. As you turn the pages of this book you will be taken on a journey that will delve you deep into the tribulation process and come away with a firm understanding of it, perhaps like never before. Every premise is backed with scripture, focused on what the bible says rather than my own ideas.

J.A. Cox hopes that all who read will walk away with a greater appreciation and devotion toward the Lord in regard to this troublesome subject and inevitable part of our lives.

PRAISE:

“…I think The Beauty of Tribulation will be relevant for Christians seeking a deeper understanding of their faith, as well as for those grappling with questions about the presence of evil in the world and the nature of divine justice. Cox’s approach which blends insightful queries, scriptural citations, and logical explanations, facilitates a comprehensive and engaging learning experience. The book encourages a connection to the experiences of Jesus and offers a perspective on suffering as a path to dignity and honor, both in heaven and on earth. Its insightful and reflective nature makes it a valuable read for people looking to deepen their understanding of Christian theology and the human experience within it.” – The Literary Titan

The Beauty of Tribulation is available at Amazon & Other Retail Outlets.

 What is Becoming Flawesome?

By Kristina Mand-Lakhiani

Being deeply involved in the personal growth industry for 20 years, surrounded by professional friends who have written and published successful books, I always assumed that I would write a book. It seemed like a natural progression within our industry. However, my tendency to be brutally honest with myself presented a challenge. I knew that I would only write a book when I had something meaningful to contribute. This realization took years because I had been focused on my work as an entrepreneur and marketer, helping other authors convey their messages and teaching their methods. It was only after some time that I recognized I had my own unique perspective to share, even if it drew inspiration from the teachings of others.

At a certain point, I felt a strong desire to share a message with the world, and that was the moment I knew I was ready to write the book. I sat down and began the writing process. However, my initial concern was finding the right publisher. Given my deep involvement in the industry, I felt a strong inclination to publish with an exceptional and reputable publisher. I hesitated to publish independently, as I felt it would not align with the ideas I embraced as a co-founder of a prominent company in our field. It dawned on me that if I wanted to write a book about staying true to myself, my values, and authenticity, I needed to do it on my own terms. This realization led me to choose self-publishing, enabling me to make independent decisions about content, writing style, and the order in which it would be presented. The initial version of the book carried a rebellious tone, reflecting this newfound autonomy.

However, upon completing the manuscript and preparing for publication, an unexpected opportunity arose. A reputable publisher, one that I had admired for some time, expressed interest in publishing my book. At that point, I felt that my book could benefit from being associated with a well-established publisher like Hay House. I agreed to work with them under the condition that they would allow me to retain my unique and somewhat obstinate style. Although additional editing was done in collaboration with Hay House, the book still maintains some of its unconventional nature. In essence, this book represents a small act of rebellion, which aligns well with its topic. This book will help you to find your way back to your most authentic self, break free from toxic perfectionism, and start living flawesomely - find the courage to be completely honest with yourself, and kindness in your heart to love and accept yourself unconditionally.

"Publishing is a Nightmare"

Six years ago I decided I wanted to write a book about my experience in North Vietnam as a Prisoner of War. I did this because I wanted something on paper for my two sons and six grandchildren. Four years later I had only written 100 pages. At 71 years of age, I realized I might not live long enough to finish my book. I decided I needed help in writing and publishing a book, so I contacted Graham Communications in Denver, Colorado. Mark Graham introduced me to Cara Lopez Lee. Cara finished my book in two years and did a great job.

Now it was time to create and publish my book. Colin Graham at Graham Publishing Group published my book. He designed the front and back covers as well as the interior for the paperback and kindle editions. He did a very nice job as well.

Then it came time to distribute my book. We started with IngramSpark. What a disaster? Amazon took 55% of the retail price off the top. The printer (Ingramspark?)  then charged $6.44 for each copy. That left me 74 cents per book as profit. That was a 5% profit for each book. I thought that was outrageous, because you typically receive a10% profit from traditional publishers. The whole idea of self-publishing is to make more than the 10% received from traditional publishers.

When I started this journey friends told me that they went to traditional publishers but did not make any money. They self published and did much better. Mark Graham said if I went to a traditional publisher they would ask me for a marketing plan. I would respond, “Yes, where is my marketing plan. You guys get 90% of the profit.” They will then say, “You don’t understand. Where is your marketing plan?” Someone told me that a marketing plane would cost $30,000. Mark said that it will cost $5.00 to print each book, and I can sell each book for $15.00. That is true if you buy the books at wholesale and then sell them on your own. However, if you go thru Amazon or Barnes and Noble, they get 55% off the top and that takes your profit. Kindle is better. With Kindle, I receive 60% of the retail price.

I replaced Ingramspark with Createspace, and now I receive $4.25 for each book sold on Amazon. Createspce only deals with Amazon, however, so I had to keep IngrahamSpark for Barnes and Noble and all the other retail outlets.

I learned that the publishing industry is designed for the benefit of printers, distributors, and book publishers. The publishing business is definitely not set up for the benefit of authors.

Title: UNEXPECTED PRISONER: Memoir of a Vietnam Prisoner of War

About the Book:

When Unexpected Prisoner opens, it’s May 6, 1967 and 23-year-old Lieutenant Robert Wideman is flying a Navy A-4 Skyhawk over Vietnam.  At 23, Wideman had already served three and a half years in the Navy—and was only 27 combat days away from heading home to America. But on that cloudless day in May, on a routine bombing run, Wideman’s plane crashed and he fell into enemy hands. Captured and held for six years as a Prisoner of War in Vietnam, Wideman endured the kind of pain that makes people question humanity.  Physical torture, however, was not the biggest challenge he was forced to withstand.  In his candid memoir, Unexpected Prisoner, Wideman details the raw, unvarnished tale of how he came to understand the truth behind Jean-Paul Sartre’s words: “Hell is other people.”

A gripping, first-person account that chronicles the six-year period Wideman spent in captivity as a POW, Unexpected Prisoner plunges readers deep into the heart of one of the most protracted, deadliest conflicts in American history:  the Vietnam War. Wideman, along with acclaimed memoirist Cara Lopez Lee, has crafted a story that is exquisitely engaging, richly detailed, and wholly captivating.  Unexpectedly candid and vibrantly vivid, this moving memoir chronicles a POW’s struggle with enemies and comrades, Vietnamese interrogators and American commanders, lost dreams, and ultimately, himself.

With its eye-opening look at a soldier’s life before, during and after captivity, Unexpected Prisoner presents a uniquely human perspective on war and on conflicts both external and internal. An exceptional story exceptionally well-told, Unexpected Prisoner is a powerful, poignant, often provocative tale about struggle, survival, hope, and redemption.

About the Author:

Robert Wideman was born in Montreal, grew up in East Aurora, New York, and has dual U.S./Canadian citizenship.
