Straight From the Mouth of Romantic Suspense Author W.L. Brooks

10 Things You Might Not Know About Crossing a Fine Line

By W.L. Brooks

  1. This is the fifth and final book in my McKay Series.
  2. I have been working on this series for twenty years (ten of which the manuscripts were in a box under my bed).
  3. Fletcher is a reader favorite.
  4. I’ve been building this enemies-to-lovers storyline over the last four books.
  5. I wrote the original first draft in one week back in 2005.
  6. Fletcher was the first character of the McKay series I wrote words for.
  7. As in the book(and the series), the show Murder, She Wrote was the inspiration for this series—this character.
  8. Fletcher is one of my favorite characters to write.
  9. This book gives Jasper’s POV for the first time in the series, and I can’t wait to hear what people think.
  10. Noah and Fletcher are one of my spicier couples.

Straight from the Mouth of James D. Bell, Author of 'Maximilian's Treasure'

You Don’t Have to Wait 40 Years to Publish Your Novel!
I should know.  It only took me 35.

Okay, I’m not proud that it took so long to publish my first novel, but it only took seven years to publish the second!  That’s big improvement!

In 1977 my best friend and I were young lawyers defending citizens charged with crimes in Mississippi.  We attracted a bit of attention because we kept winning cases.  Jack was a loyal friend, an intrepid investigator, and a great researcher.  Together we regularly accomplished what at first seemed impossible.  Jack died twenty years ago; too young; too soon.

Our practice created many novel opportunities.  For instance, forty years ago a weathered elderly Choctaw man told us that he believed that Civil War gold was on his farm in Mississippi.  He believed that Maximilian, the Emperor of Mexico, sent gold to support the South’s war effort, and that none other than Jesse James (then a member of the Confederate Cavalry) was involved with the shipment.  The war ended when the gold was near his farm and was hidden there.  He asked us to help him look for the treasure.  This was too far-fetched to believe, but my friend and I said, “Why not?”  We traveled with him to his farm and had a great day listening to his stories while we searched with him.

You might think this unusual.  It’s not.  It’s just another day of law practice in Mississippi, where the unusual and outlandish is an everyday occurrence.

I started writing novels based upon some of our adventures over forty years ago, but I lacked the discipline to finish a whole book.  I didn’t have the right motivation.  I penned a few short stories and sent them to magazines, hoping that would kick start my writing career.

Crickets.

No response.  At last I received a rejection!  I thought about framing it as proof that my writing had finally attracted the attention it deserves from a publisher.  Years passed.  The unwritten stories kept bubbling up, needing to be told.  Yet, I couldn’t make myself finish a novel.

For years I shared my book ideas with my wife, bless her.  Finally, on New Year’s Day 2011, she dared me to finish a book that year.  She asked me, “Why do you want to write?”  I didn’t have a quick answer.  Then, it struck me that every book and every movie used to have a purpose, a “moral to the story.”  I feel that we have lost that purpose with some of today’s entertainment.  I am motivated to bring back the moral to the story.  That gave me my reason to write.  I finished our first novel, Vampire Defense, that year.

“Okay,” she said.  “You have a novel, now what are you going to do?”  I found a course at Millsaps College, “How to Sell What You Write,” taught by a publisher.  I followed the advice in the course.  Then, good fortune struck.  The teacher of the course agreed to publish my book.  I put as much work into selling the book as I put into writing it.  The work paid off.  The publisher told me it was his best-selling novel.  He was happy to publish my second novel, Maximilian’s Treasure, a book inspired by actual experiences.

Don’t wait 35 years to finish your work.  You have a purpose.  Find it.  Live it.  Write it.  Be ready to spend as much time selling your work as you spent writing it.

By the way, you really need to buy Maximilian’s Treasure.  It is an action-packed legal thriller filled with treasures that will enrich your life.

Three Lies that Romance Acquisition Editors Tell

Have you ever been to a writer’s conference or a seminar and listened to acquisition editors talk about what kind of manuscripts they’re looking for? I have, perhaps one too many times, judging from my current level of cynicism. If you haven’t been, surely you’ve come across those requests for manuscripts at the end of a book or social media, you know, the ones that say “Such and such editor from such and such house is looking for such and such kind of stories?”

I see dozens of requests like these every day. I hear them when I go to the conferences as well. Yeah, I’m the snarky witch sitting in the back row, usually snickering when the acquisition editors tell us that they’re looking for diverse reads, strong heroines and quality fiction. Ha! I know better.

Acquisition editors are not really looking for diversity. Instead, they’re looking for market share. Which means that they’d like to publish fiction that will expand their presence in the market. And since the demographics are changing, that means that they’re desperate to find ways of integrating a more “diverse” readership into their markets.

The concept of “diversity” is thus an economic necessity and a survival strategy for the industry. Which means that if you’re a minority author you will not be published in an effort to promote diversity in the genre. You will be published based on your ability to bring new readership to the industry and sell your book. That’s the truth that nobody wants to speak aloud.

Acquisitions editors are not looking for strong heroines either. In fact, if I’d gotten a buck every time an editor has told me that what sells a book in romance is the hero, not the heroine, I’d be rich. They’re looking for heroes that knock their readership’s socks off. As one editor once told me, “we are selling romance, not women’s fiction.” Silly me. I always thought romance was the most popular manifestation of women’s fiction.

And finally acquisition editors are not looking for quality romance fiction. They’re looking for fiction that sells. Quality is incidental. It is true that there are a lot of quality romances out there. Thank the universe for that. But to an acquisition’s editor, a “good” book is one that sells. Period.

I’m all for making an honest buck. I understand the industry’s drive to survive. I just wish that acquisition editors would tell the truth so that writers could make their creative decisions based on facts and not lies. This is especially relevant for newbies who don’t know how the industry works. At the end of the day it’s all about the business, expanding market share and increasing sales. The rest is all PC rhetoric and wishful thinking, pretty words and lots of hoopla.

Questionnaire:

Thanks for letting us interrogate you!

You are very welcome, and thank you for having me back.

Can you give us a go-for-the-gut answer as to why you wanted to be an author?

Because I can’t stop my writing addiction and I might as well do something productive with it.

Tell us (we won’t tell promise!) is it all it’s cracked up to be?  I mean what are the perks and what are the demands?

Writing is a constant process, so the demands are huge. Creatively, you spend a lot of or time and energy spinning your weave. Technically, the work can be grueling as you polish and prim, prim and polish. Perfection is pretty much unattainable and yet you try and you keep on trying. The rewards—especially at the beginning—are few and mostly intangible. Once you hit the publishing path, it can be pretty intense. You’ve got to have grit to be an author, but above all, you’ve got to love what you do. The biggest perk—the only perk for some of us—is the time and trust of our readers. We live and die by our readers.

Which route did you take – traditional or self-published – and can you give us the nitty gritty low down on what’s that like?

I’m published by Carina Press, an imprint of Harlequin. I love working with Carina. The Stranger is my third novel with them and they’re still impressing me. I have the incredible good fortune of working with Kerri Buckley as my in-house editor. She’s amazing. The team does a fantastic job at putting together quality, sexy, gorgeous books. I’ve always said that publishing a book should be a sport at the Olympics. The team that I work with at Carina would win the gold for sure.

Tell us for real what your family feels about you spending so much time getting your book written, polished, edited, formatted, published, what have you?

They’re super supportive, which is the greatest blessing. I don’t think I could do this without their love and support.

Do your pets actually get their food on time or do they have to wait until you type just one more word?

I have cats. They keep me around for the express purpose of feeding and grooming them. Do cats ever wait for anything or anybody?

Are your plants actually still alive?

The only plant I own is a plastic flip flop. I’ve killed mostly everything else. The cats ate the unlucky survivors.

In writing your book, how did you deal with the phone ringing, your family needing dinner or your boss calling you saying you’re late?

I ignore the phone, my husband cooks dinner and I don’t have a boss anymore. My friends do get irritated when I drop off the face of the earth, but they know I’ll be back…someday.

What was the craziest or insane thing that happened to you in the book publishing process?

I once had a book accepted for publication on my birthday. But I think I told you this the last time you “interrogated” me. The craziest thing that has happened to me was when Carina decided to publish not only my first novel, but all four romances I’d written. Epically insane. And it happened to. Me!

How about the social networks?  Which ones do you believe help and which ones do you wish you could avoid?

I like Facebook and Twitter as a way to keep the connection. To be honest, I don’t have the time to do much more than that and even then, sometimes I go MIA, especially when I’m writing. But I do love to keep in contact with fellow writers and readers. When I hear from them, they make my day.

Book sales.  Don’t you just love them (or lack of?)?  How are you making the sales happen for you?

I’m very fortunate that Carina Press has resources and expertise I wouldn’t be able to access otherwise. They know what they’re doing. So I just put my novels in their hand. Heather Goldberg, Carina’s Digital Coordinator is a fountain of wisdom. I credit them with making The Asset an Amazon Bestseller.

What is one thing you’d like to jump on the rooftop and scream about?

Politics. Can we please start over?

Okay, too much sugar for you today!  Here’s a nice cup of Chamomile tea and come on over and sit under the cabana and watch the waves roll in.  Now…can you tell us what you love about being a published author and how all those things above doesn’t matter because it’s all part of the whole scheme of things and you wouldn’t have it any other way?

Done.
